Freddie Benson (Steve Martin) is a small time confidence trickster preying on victims in the French Riviera. Whilst going about his despicable work he comes across the path of Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) who by a strange coincidence is in the same line of work. The patch that the two con men operate on is well known for its rich pickings but is only big enough for one of them. A plan is hatched at the expense of an American heiress. The two men agree on a wager that the first one of them to fleece the rich woman of $50,000 has the exclusive right to ply his trade in the wealthy resort.
