Tim O’Hara (Jeff Daniels) is a news producer who gets fired for a mishap during a live transmission of a space shuttle launch. His tech girl, Lizzie (Daryl Hannah) has a crush on him. Tim witnesses a Martian spacecraft crash and decides this is his chance to deliver a shocking story to Earth. Brace Channing (Elizabeth Hurley) is his ex-boss’ daughter, and the reason he got fired. He shows her the ship and takes it home with him. What Tim doesn’t realize is that the spaceship was manned. The spacecraft’s occupant follows Tim in order to get his spaceship back. Tim discovers him, and has to help him repair his ship. He nicknames the Martian “Uncle Martin”. Brace steals the evidence of the spaceship for herself, but in doing so, causes Lizzie to believe that Tim has cheated on her. To further complicate things, an extra-terrestrial research agency called SETI also has plans to investigate the crash and spaceship.
