For centuries, Santa Claus (David Huddleston) and his elves have been merrily making toys at the North Pole for the children of the world. This year, head elf Patch (Dudley Moore) decides to try his fast new automated toy machine. But when the children of the world wake up and find that the machine has malfunctioned and their toys don’t work, Patch leaves the North Pole and heads to Manhattan to prove himself. Being a very smart but also very naïve elf, he gets mixed up with B.Z. (John Lithgow), the not-so-honest owner of B.Z. Toys, who is currently under investigation by the US Senate for their shoddy toy-making practices. B.Z. uses Patch and his popular new candy canes to try to capitalize on Christmas, pushing Santa out and ushering in his own “Christmas II.” But when Patch discovers the candy canes have a dangerous defect and B.Z. refuses to stop production, it’s up to Patch to reunite with Santa and his new orphan friend Joe (Christian Fitzpatrick) to stop B.Z. Toys and restore Christmas to the children of the world.
