Gertrude "Trudy" Lintz (Rene Russo) has a strange hobby of collecting animals to live with her and her husband Bill (Robbie Coltrane) in their New York mansion. Trudy's greatest challenge was when she brought home a sick gorilla she named Buddy. Because her husband is a doctor, he advised how to treat the gorilla and he survived. Trudy loves to dress her animals up like people and even speaks to them and believes they understand her. She takes them to the movies and has them eat at their dinner table--even when she has guests over. So she is confident when she brings Buddy to be on exhibition at the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago.
