Ebenezer Scrooge (George C. Scott) is a contemptuous old miser. Scrooge feels no joy in the Christmas season despite the cheer of those around him, including his poor employee Bob Cratchit (David Warner) and his nephew Fred Hollywell (Roger Rees). On Christmas Eve Scrooge is visited by an apparition of his dead business partner Jacob Marley (Frank Finlay) who is suffering in the afterlife. Marley warns Scrooge to change his miserly ways, or he will suffer even worse torments. Marley foretells of three ghosts that will visit Scrooge in order to influence him to change. The first of the three spirits is the Ghost of Christmas Past (Angela Pleasence) who takes Scrooge to visit the happier times of his youth. The Ghost of Christmas Present (Edward Woodward) then shows Scrooge the harsh reality of the lifestyle of his employee Bob Cratchit. Finally the Ghost of Christmas Future (Michael Carter) shows Scrooge his own death. Scrooge awakes on Christmas day having learned something about the spirit of Christmas and the value of friendship.
